The IEC requires a deposit of over R 500 000
of organizations wishing to contest the elections - this is an obstacle to the
poor. This amount is too much; it is a barrier to democratic participation, it
is unnecessary and discriminatory.
This means that only the wealthy and those
with rich capitalist backers can fully enter the South African elections.
We, the undersigned, believe that the platform
of the Socialist Green Coalition (SGC) should form part of the national debate
during the 2009 national and provincial elections. The South African public has
the right to full democratic choice and information.
We support the campaign of the SGC to replace
the IEC deposit with 10 000 signatures. This will allow organizations that
fight around issues affecting the working class and the poor to raise their
issues in the public arena during the elections without being tied by the
politics of rich sponsors.
The Socialist Green Coalition consists of
organizations that fight against the exploitation of human beings and the destruction of the
environment by unaccountable business and industry.
