SGC - Charter of Unifying Common Principles (Basis of Membership)

We invite all organisations that agree with our campaigns, manifesto, constitution and charter of principles to join the Socialist Green Coalition.

Unifying principles:

All the participating organisations have equal status within the Coalition.

The participating organisations will remain autonomous.

The purpose of the Coalition is not to replace the participating organisations.

The Coalition is a vehicle to optimise gains for common objectives.

The Coalition will not have one single leader who might dominate other participating organisations. The Coalition will rather have a leadership collective (made up of a delegate from each of the participating organisations) with official spokespersons to issue statements on behalf of the Coalition, but who cannot dictate policy and procedure.

Policies must be developed from common ground and not be artificially imposed on participating organisations.

The Coalition will develop a straightforward issues based manifesto.

The organisations that participate will agree on a charter of common principles to hold the Coalition together.

Agreements must be made through a consensus decision-making process based on the common principles of the Coalition.

Organisations should not be chastised for leaving as and when they see fit.

New member organisations should enrol on the basis of the Coalition’s established charter of common principles.

The Coalition will not allow positions it gains in parliament to be exploited to legitimise a flawed system.

The Coalition will formally contract with its parliamentary delegates concerning terms of accountability, recall, payment and conditions etc. Delegates may not receive payment or privileges above a living wage standard.

The monies accruing to the Coalition will be used and distributed according to the collective decisions of the Coalition.

Member organisations are required to pay a joining fee of an amount set according to the collective decision of the Coalition.
